The peperino rocks: historical and volcanological overview

Abstract The name peperino derives from the Italian word pepe (from Latin piper , pepper) and has been used in common language for lithified volcanic deposits characterized by light grey through dark tones granular textures, resembling that of ground pepper. Among these, best-known examples are represented some phreatomagmatic Colli Albani Volcanic District, near Rome (Italy), ignimbrite Cimini Mountains Viterbo (Northern Latium, Italy), which have widely employed artefacts historical archaeological interest. In particular, these resistant rocks Etruscans Romans since seventh century BCE to produce sarcophagi dimension stones, as well architectural ornamental elements. These still use building ornaments, street furniture artworks central Italy today. this review, we provide an overview term, exhaustive review different defined describing their distinctive textural features, eruptive sources outcrop areas. Indeed, despite macroscopic aspect, can be associated with several styles emplacement mechanisms.
